I stayed at the Ivy Lodge in Newport. The owners and staff were wonderful to talk to and extremely accommodating. I highly recommend staying here on your trip. It has a great location, just a block from Bellevue Avenue and minutes away from the famous Cliff Walk!
Turret Room
After my first night at the Ivy Lodge, I decided to get my bearings and wander down Bellevue Avenue to see what all the hype was. I definitely saw more taking this venture by foot than I would have ever seen from a car. All the buildings were built in the Gilded Age and the mansions were larger than life. Pictures do not reflect the true beauty of this fabulous place.
Bellevue Avenue
De La Salle
I believe this is a private residence...just a block down from the Ivy Lodge.
Here are more shots from the famed Bellevue Avenue...most are privately-owned residences.
International Tennis Hall of Fame on Bellevue
Avenue - This is in a very old building called the Casino.
I actually merged 3 photos together, which explains the vertical lines.
Former Naval War College Building
The Elms - One of the most popular mansions.
First Presbyterian Church - This church has beautiful stained glass and gorgeous grounds. The statue is directly in front of the church.
...and our friend Mary we met in class who
brought wittiness, humor and fun to our trip. She was also our gracious chauffeur
throughout our trip and always had an excuse to stop at Starbucks. :)
The Hotel Viking is a beautiful landmark at one end of Bellevue Avenue. Also the place where the airport shuttle drops off.
Isaac Bell House - This mansion is under renovation right now, inside and out.
Thames Street & America's Cup Blvd.
Shots of the gorgeous buildings and the narrow streets. It took us all of 20 minutes to find Starbucks!
Post Office - Newport, RI
Samuel Whitehorne House - Built in 1811
Naval War College - These shots are both from the College. The one on the right shows the bridge that connects Jamestown and Newport.
Ocean Drive - Various shots of our tour on Ocean Drive. Truly gorgeous!
Newport Harbor - We happened to be down in the harbor during a beautiful sunset. The sailboats added to the beauty.
Unfortunately, there wasn't enough time to see everything or spend the time needed to truly experience all of Newport. It is an extremely lovely place and I hope to return soon.
